Marchisella dispels nuclear waste rumour

Elliot Lake mayor Dan Marchisella says there’s no truth to a rumour that the Nuclear Waste Management Organization has picked the community as the depository for nuclear waste.  The rumour got started when dozens of culverts were replaced and added along Highway 108 last year.  It created the perception that the community was being prepared to start accepting the waste.  But Marchisella says any decision is at least eight to 10 years off.

In addition, even if Elliot Lake is still in the running as a depository, it’s still residents who have the last say.  That’s because the residents will decide in a referendum whether to accept the waste or not.  Marchisella says the culverts were replaced because they’re at the end of their usefulness.  He adds extra big ones were added to improve water flow because during the spring, there are still parts of the 108 that overflow.  And during 2016, the Ministry of Transportation will re-surface Highway 108.
