NDP demands action on homelessness in the north

The MPP for Kenora-Rainy River says it`s time the Wynne Liberals address poverty.  New Democrat Sarah Campbell says in Sudbury alone, the number of homeless people has more than doubled since 2009.  Indigenous people make up eight percent of Sudbury`s population but they represent about 43 percent of the city`s homelessness.

The number includes 182 children under 18 with no homes.  And Campbell says the news doesn`t get any better for other northern cities.  She says the homeless rates in North Bay and Timmins is higher than other communities in Canada.  Poverty minister Deb Matthews says her government recognizes that this is a problem and has developed strategies to fight homelessness.
