Haweater Weekend celebrates 50th anniversary this year

When Little Current holds this year’s version of Haweater Weekend, it will mark a special occasion.  This is the 50th anniversary of the August long weekend festival.  Haweater is the nickname given to people born on Manitoulin.  According to stories, early European settlers were hit with a famine and what kept them alive were hawthorn berries of which there were plenty.  The annual festival features concerts, sports and recreational events and the sale of hawberry-flavoured goods like ice cream and jams.
