Police encourage safe boating

With the opening of many camps across the north, comes a reminder from OPP detachments.  Be mindful of when you’re on the water.  This is Safe Boating Week and some detachments are patrolling lakes to make sure pleasure craft seekers are obeying the laws.  Police say some standard equipment boaters need to have include a bailing bucket, whistle and lifejackets.  Also depending on the size of your craft, you need flares or a fire extinguisher.  One thing police want boaters to remember is not to operate a boat after drinking.  Getting caught means getting hit with the same fines and penalties you would receive if you were driving drunk on a highway.  Police say the objective of their patrols is to ensure everyone has a safe spring and summer on northern lakes.
