Steelworkers create scholarship fund to recognize Westray Mine explosion

The Steelworkers have created an annual scholarship to mark the 25th anniversary of the Westray coal mine explosion that killed 26 miners in Nova Scotia.  The explosion has special significant for some Elliot Lake families because some of the miners started working at Westray when the local mines began closing.   The $2,500 scholarship is intended for high school students in the Stellarton area where the explosion took place who plan to go on to college or university.   Applicants need to write an essay or produce a video on one of two themes.   They can chose between what legacy the tragedy left behind or how the community became more determined following the deadly explosion.
